Downspout discharge onto roof illustration

I call out this condition every time I see it which seems to be on virtually every house! Does anyone have a good graphic / illustration I can use in my reports?

Perhaps IntrtNACHI could make one?

Why not just use a picture of the specific property so the client sees exactly what you are talking about and has a point of reference? Graphics are great but real world is better.

Rick, i’m not sure which search engine you’re using and you prolly already know this but…

copy and paste into browser: downspout discharge onto lower roof

if google, header bar you should see
+You Web Images Videos Maps News Mail More

click Images and you may find what you need

you can easily search any info/images related by the subject in browser

try yourself it may be a surprise

Btw… Don’t let Roy see that post. He’s convinced I don’t know chit.

That’s right Barry. If you are looking for XXX on the internet, JJ is your man. Hmm, hold on there. That XXX search could mean “fill in your item at the XXX” or it could mean… hmm… never mind.

Doesn’t NACHI have a graphics library?

Must admit it needs work however.I can not read the thumbs without clicking on them making search rather cumbersome.
Normally resting my mouse of images makes them larger but the code must be messed up in this Library.http://www.nachi.org/gallery/roofing/gutters_and_downspouts

I totally agree. If I call out an issue and want a pic of it, I use the real pic of the actual issue at the home…Reality is a wonderful thing. In this biz “It Is What It Is”

Jim

You all must remember that many inspectors do not take pictures, and/or include them in their reports.

Just look on this MB for the number of posts that request help, but have no pic’s of the issue.

If **we **don’t understand, how in the heck do you expect a client to understand what you’re attempting to say?

Thanks guys, I always include a photo of the actual condition as I observed it however I would like a good illustration of the problem and how it can be remedied. I do not want to include an actual photograph from a different house of the eventual deterioration that will be caused nor how it should look after being corrected. I would prefer a black and white illustration so there is no confusion.

I search Google images as described but have yet to find a good illustration of roof cladding deterioration from concentrated water discharge, or downspout extensions leading from an upper roof to a lower roof eaves trough or down to grade. The Carson Dunlop one is the closest but dormers don’t concern me much as there is not enough roof area to be worried about, I’m looking for split / bi-levels with larger upper roof surfaces.

I am sure if you ask Nick! He will send you one and then put it on the Nachi Library. Here is one for now.
This one is diverting from the sidewalk.

It’s a non-issue in my view. Never seen a worn spot on shingles beneath a downspout, unless the entire roof is shot.

Interesting I was out inspecting and saw a house with a proper downspout and extension into a gutter from the top roof today. It was not one of my Inspections so I knocked on the door to see if I could take a picture of it but no one came to the door. I will try again when I am on that side of town and if I can I will get your picture.

You have now, 3 different houses

Thanks Kevin but I am leary of putting an actual photograph of a house other than the one I am inspecting into a report.
