Looks like pics from a ladder, from the ground, me and the camera actually being on the roof.

Next time I have $300 extra i may consider the drone idea. I may save time (on a non windy day) fly it up snap some pics, bring it in, sound like less time than get out the ladder extend it up, climb up to the roof, snap some pics, climb down, fold up the ladder put it away.
You put it on video.
You take stills off the video easily unless you have cr-ppy video.

Glad to see guys trying new ideas and sharing.

Great article. The AR Drone is perfect for handy work, especially inspecting roofs. Makes your life much easier. The AR Drone is fairly expensive though so be careful! I recommend mastering the UDI U818A before taking on the AR just because it's much cheaper and more durable. The camera isn't half bad either. Check out this review, it helped me make my decision!

I personally have no need for a small drone to inspect residential roofs I inspected a A-frame roof Saturday from on the roof.

But But But I have been looking at a German made quad chopper with a infrared 640 gyro mounted Flir Camera belly mounted for commercial flat roofs. But have been waiting to see the outcome of the FAA requirements for commercial use before I invest big bucks. They require a two day school to learn to fly it in order to purchase insurance for it

I just wanted to put this out there in case someone saw this drone and thought of using it for a similar purpose, just what my experience with it is/has been. I actually had an insurance roof inspection today on a 2 story house where I used it to snap 4 shots of the roof. Was super fast and client was impressed with it, but the ultimate goal is to get the job done be it this way or any other. Embracing technology doesn't necessarily mean going all in, but it certainly is neat to see things like this be produced and all the different things people can do with it.
Nice review, Glenn...

I bought the "cheap" drone a few hours ago $62.00 shipping included.

For $62 I can see how it works out for me as I think walking roofs is not the smartest way to spend time when your over 60. As the OP suggested, try the "toy" drone and see how you like it.

Walked a roof last week and yes you can see more than from a ladder but I think a painters pole is the smart way to go and plan on getting the 30' one I saw for a couple of hundred.

I am in a small group of inspectors that doesn't think roof walking is needed.

The OP is two years old... It was a good review. I'm betting they are cheaper and better now. There is another thread with good info on the subject too.

$62 is all I paid as it is marked down from then original price of $500.

For $62 I can use it to impress the kids if it doesn't work as an inspection tool.

I do lots of 203K inspections and roof walking is not part of the deal, might try it there.
