I could see an advertisement in the system for Porch explaining to the customer why they should opt in, but Porch calling my client because they failed to opt out would not sit well with me.

One of the facebook suggestions that I really liked was the ability to add some text and an opt in link to our emails that are sent to the customers. I would be onboard with that.

My understanding is that you can definitely still use the RA (now RRL) without Porch since you can turn Porch completely off.

I think ISN should have done a deal with a national moving company instead of a repair contractor.... because a moving company doesn't conflict with the independence of our inspection reports.

Inspectors are the only independent party to a real estate transaction, everyone else has a financial interest in the deal. Once we lose our independence, we lose our reason to be hired.

I just contacted is and and they said there is a link to opt out. I let them know it's a ****y thing to not let the inspectors know beforehand. I think they're feeling the pinch

In Dan's webinar he said that Porch isn't paying them anything for this. I can't think of any scenario where that would be true with one exception: Porch bought out ISN. I think Dan should state whether or not ISN was purchased by Porch.com or not.

In many regards, I think our ability to be independent and remain unbiased is part of our value as an industry and for many buyers, the reason that they are hiring a home inspector... Maybe it's time for Nachi to lead the way to ensure such positive conditions remain.

There were talks on this forum in years past asking Nachi to create a path to prevent indirect and direct compensation for an inspector for sharing/selling/exchanging or whatever creative twist is put on sharing client information. I'd suggest it's time to do just that, as there are to be more and more twists and turns where information is valuable to someone.. How simple would it be for our industry to say something as simple as "An inspector can not receive any direct / indirect compensation in exchange for any information gained from the inspection nor exchange otherwise sell/financially gain from their clients information" something.. it's time.

The reality is... It won't ever happen... InterNachi will lose half of it's multi-inspector members, and 90 percent of it's newbie members. These are the two class of inspectors who these programs (data for sale) are targeting. JMHO.

Sadly, I somewhat agree with and understand your rationale, but at some point, the long term effect of the data mining occurring in our industry can only hurt it's reputation. I can't imagine how embarrassed most of us would feel to have a customer call to complain about a 3rd party sales call that claimed to have my/the inspector's endorsement. Maybe a few of those later and a couple of news pieces or articles get passed around.

As far as the products currently being exchanged for client data, I'm not sure as to how many pay and how many exchange, but if the exchange is out of the equation, the products can have merit on their own to be paid for without the cloud of having privacy concerns.

Short term gains vs long term problems IMO, but like many of us here.. I'm just one of many.

The banks got in trouble a few years ago with the automatic opt in on overdraft protection, did not go well with them.
