It's a poor's man HRV. That air intake should extend to the outside. I have a document that explain its purpose but is too large to upload here. Send me your email and I will send it to you.

Thanks Robert for your quick response!
I could not confirm where it was connected because I did not remove the cover. It had pointy screws holding it and the disconnect beside (with the pennies)...
