To Become a Licensed Home Inspector in Virginia

To become a licensed home Inspector in Virginia, in advance of the mandatory state licensing for home inspectors that will go into effect in July 1, 2017, we recommend this class to become certified.

Once certified, Virginia DPOR states that “an individual who holds an unexpired certificate as a home inspector issued by the Board will be issued a license to practice as a home inspector.”

Follow these 2 Steps:

  1. Complete our 35-hour live, hands-on class to become certified.
  2. Fill out and submit an Application for Certification to the state.

Virginia Home Inspector Details (as of December 2016):

Visit the Virginia website for details on home inspector certification and licensing, including the required applications and documents. The rules and regulations are located at www.dpor.virginia.gov/Boards/ALHI/#Laws_and_Regulations. For upcoming changes affecting home inspector regulation in Virginia, visit http://www.dpor.virginia.gov/Boards/ALHI/HI_Licensure/.

According to DPOR, there are several methods to qualify for a Virginia Home Inspectors Certification, including distance and required instruction options and completions of home inspections. One method is by completing 35 hours of instruction (no more than half by distance or online education) and 100 home inspections or 50 supervised inspections.

Virginia states in their Guidance Document that distance education courses are accepted. But no more than half of the hours of instruction required for VA Home Inspector Certification may be completed using distance or online education technology.
