Simple Video Equipment

Cell Phone

The video capability of smartphones is increasing every year.  The best part is that by using applications like the YouTube app, you can shoot, edit and upload videos from the field in just minutes.

Cell Phone Holder and Tripod

No one likes to watch shaky video. By using a tripod, your videos will look more professional and will also allow you to film yourself, when needed.

Phone holders like this can be used for both iPhones and Android phones.  They range in price from $10 to $25 and can be found at
your local big-box store or online. Make sure
it has a threaded hole in the bottom so that it can attached to your tripod.

Tripods range in price from $20 to $500.  There is no need to get anything too fancy.  What is important is that it is stable and easy to use.  If it is too big and cumbersome, you're less likely to take the time to pull it out of your vehicle and actually use it.

YouTube Account

With the YouTube application, you can shoot, edit and upload your videos from the field. Below are videos that walk you through the steps of setting up your own YouTube account.

 Tips for Filming

Do NOT hold you camera vertically!

While this technique is gaining in popularity,  it is not appropriate for professional video.  Our theater screens and televisions are horizontal, so your YouTube videos should be shot that way, too.

Pay attention to the audio.

The viewer needs to be able to hear the video.  Make sure the phone/camera is placed close to the subject and out of the wind.  If you need to, move the speaker around the corner of the house out of the wind, or even indoors.

Stabilize the phone, when possible.

When filming a defect, this in not always possible, but use the tripod whenever you can.  If you are in a crawlspace or attic where you cannot use the tripod, try to rest the camera against something solid.
