Florida Advanced Radon Measurement Service Provider Class

Florida Statutes require the certification of businesses and individuals providing radon services or any other radon related activity. The individual certifications are based on skills and abilities as demonstrated by successful completion of a radon training course, passing the training exam, and properly following standards of practice.
 
 
*Applicants interested in being a Radon Specialist must also register for Technician webinar.
 
 
Class Goal:
The goal of this class is to teach the student how to perform radon measurements.
 
Class Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student shall be able to:

  • describe the physics of radon;
  • describe the health effects of breathing radon;
  • list the ways radon enters a home;
  • describe the testing procedures for radon;
  • follow protocols in non-real estate transactions;
  • follow protocols in real estate transactions;
  • develop and follow a quality assurance plan and implement quality control procedures;
  • properly use passive devices;
  • properly use active devices;
  • test for radon in water and how to remove radon from water;
  • list different ways to approach radon mitigation in homes;
  • install effective mitigation systems in new homes;
  • install materials and follow procedures to build radon-resistant homes;
  • inspect radon mitigation system; and 
  • abide by a Code of Ethics.
 
Class Topics Cover:
The class subjects are applicable to Florida and shall enable the student to meet training objectives provided by the FL Dept of Health and includes the following:
 
  • Radon Measurement Specialist Training.
    • Two hours of instruction on radioactivity, radon and radon's health effects.
    • One and one-half hours of instruction on Florida's radon legislation and administrative rules and federal radon legislation and proficiency programs.
    • Two and one-half hours of instruction on radon entry and behavior.
    • One hour of instruction on worker health and safety.
    • Seven hours of instruction on radon measurement devices, techniques, and protocols.
    • One and one-quarter hours of instruction on building investigation and diagnostics and mitigation strategies and techniques applicable to Florida.
    • One-half hour of instruction on radon-resistant building techniques for new construction applicable to Florida.
    • One hour of instruction on measurement and mitigation techniques for radon in domestic water.
  • Radon Measurement Technician Training.
    • One and one-quarter hours of instruction on radioactivity, radon, and radon's health effects.
    • One and one-half hours of instruction on Florida's radon legislation and administrative rules and federal radon legislation and proficiency programs.
    • One and three-quarters hours of instruction on radon entry and behavior.
    • One hour of instruction on worker health and safety.
    • Five hours of instruction on radon measurement devices, techniques, and protocols, including one hour of experience deploying, retrieving, and reporting results of various measurement devices.
    • One-half hour of instruction on mitigation strategies and techniques applicable to Florida.
    • One-half hour of instruction on radon-resistant building techniques for new construction applicable to Florida.
    • One-half hour of instruction on measurement and mitigation techniques for radon in domestic water.
