Flat Roof Installation: Built-Up Roofing (BUR)
Built-up roofing is abbreviated BUR and is also sometimes called tar-and-gravel roofing. A built-up roof
consists of layers called plies. The more plies or overlapping layers there are, the longer the roof will tend
to last. It needs a periodic application of an additional top coat of tar or bitumen, or a supplementation of
the ballast or granules. Built-up or tar-and-gravel roofs should not be installed on a roof with a slope of
more than 3:12.
