EPA, RESNET & InterNACHI Update

May 29, 2012

After nearly four years working collaboratively with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), InterNACHI, the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors, has recently decided to retract its formal application for approval as an Alternative Verification Oversight Organization for Home Energy Ratings of ENERGY STAR-Qualified Homes.

InterNACHI recently announced its new strategic alliance and agreement with RESNET, the Residential Energy Services Network (https://www.nachi.org/resnet-strategic-alliance-press-release.htm). As two of the nation's largest non-profit inspector accreditation organizations, both InterNACHI and RESNET are committed to educating homeowners by helping them understand the functions, materials, systems and components of their properties to reduce the cost of their utility bills by making their homes more energy-efficient.

RESNET is responsible for creating the national training and certification standards for HERS Raters and Home Energy Survey Professionals, both of which are recognized by federal government agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the U.S. mortgage industry.

InterNACHI is the world’s largest organization of residential and commercial property inspectors who perform more than 10,000 property inspections every day. As a federally tax-exempt, 501(c)(6) non-profit, InterNACHI provides professional training, accredited education and certification.

InterNACHI is a U.S. Department of Energy Home Energy Score Partner (https://www.nachi.org/home-energy-score.htm), a nationally-recognized Home Energy Survey Provider (http://www.resnet.us/professional/programs/survey_providers), a Home Energy Audit Provider (http://archive.resnet.us/programs/hea/directory.aspx), a Home Energy Audit Training Provider (http://archive.resnet.us/programs/training-hea/directory.aspx), and InterNACHI's online Home Energy Inspection Tool is a nationally approved online home energy survey program (http://www.resnet.us/professional/programs/energy_survey_programs).

Last week, the EPA put out a notice acknowledging InterNACHI's attempts to acquire approval as an alternative to RESNET.  InterNACHI is the only organization to ever submit such an application to the EPA.

"Dear ENERGY STAR Partners -

In August 2008 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was solicited by an outside organization to develop criteria that would define an Alternative Verification Oversight Organization for Home Energy Ratings of ENERGY STAR Qualified Homes. In response to this request, EPA developed criteria and began accepting applications for National ENERGY STAR Verification Oversight Organizations. This email serves as a notice that EPA has received a formal application. The applicant, The International Association of Certified Home Inspectors (InterNACHI), is located Boulder, Colorado. EPA is currently reviewing the application.

The status will be updated on the ENERGY STAR Website via the policy page.

Regards,

The ENERGY STAR Homes Team
