King Post Truss

A king post truss is a vertical post used to help support a beam below from a truss apex above.

King post trusses are subjected to compression and tension. As the load is applied downward, compression is increased at the posts. Rafter boards and the ridge board are normally under compression while holding up or resisting a load. The exterior load-bearing walls are holding up a load and are therefore under compression.
