Overcutting the Stairway Stringer
Notching dimension lumber to build cut stringers (see illustration below) is a common practice that takes into consideration only the depth of wood beneath the tread-riser notches as effective in resisting the applied load. For cut stringers, care should be taken not to overcut the limits of the notch. Overcutting notches in stringers is a major defect.
