Home Inspector Pre-Licensing
To meet education and experience requirements for licensure, applicants must complete both a board-approved 120-hour pre-licensing training course and 80 hours of field training. The NC Board approves InterNACHI's:
- 120-hour free online pre-licensing course,
- 120-hour in-person class, and
- 80-hour field training.

To help prepare for the state exam, you may take advantage of several resources we provide, such as InterNACHI's Online Inspector Exam (free and open to everyone), the InterNACHI® Ultimate Home Inspection Practice Tool (free for members), and InterNACHI's online courses (free for members). Insurance for Inspectors
To be a licensed home inspector in North Carolina, individuals must meet certain requirements for adequate insurance coverage. InterNACHI members are eligible for discounts and enhanced coverage. Visit nachi.org/insurance for information on how to sign up.
Become a Certified Professional Inspector CPI®
Jus
t because you're licensed, doesn't mean you'll be successful. Once you're licensed, it's all about marketing your credibility and value. To become an InterNACHI® Certified Home Inspector and attain the Certified Professional Inspector CPI® designation, complete the home inspector certification requirements. The training, exam, and certification are all online and free for members. Once you're certified, the InterNACHI® Marketing Team will help you with your marketing.
Inspector Continuing Education (online & free for members)
The North Carolina Home Inspector Licensure Board approves InterNACHI® as a Course Sponsor of free, online courses for home inspectors. InterNACHI® pays the $5/credit hour fee to upload the course completions for you to the state. According to the state:
- You cannot take the same free online course within a three-year period to renew your license, but we have plenty to choose from.
- Licensed inspectors can not obtain CE between September 10th and October 1st. Courses must be taken outside of that timeframe in order to obtain state credit.

Performing a Home Inspection on the Coast of North Carolina
Radon Tester Certification in NC
Although the State of North Carolina does not require radon testers or mitigators to hold any certifications, the North Carolina Radon Program strongly recommends that homeowners hire a trained professional. Become an InterNACHI Certified Radon Tester by taking InterNACHI's free, online Radon Measurement Professional Initial Training Course, which is AARST-NRPP approved for both initial certification and Continuing Education, and NRSB-approved for Continuing Education credit.

NRSB:
InterNACHI's free, online Radon Measurement Professional Initial Training Course is NRSB-approved for initial certification. For those looking for NRSB continuing education, members should take the free, online "Advanced Radon Measurement Service Provider" course.
Real Estate Agent Marketing
North Carolina-licensed real estate agents can attain free Continuing Education credits by following the directions on the real estate cards. Members can hand out these cards to real estate agents. They explain how to log into the free courses.
When an agent logs into a course and enters the member's ID number, the member is automatically emailed. The first slide of the course is the member's contact information.

Become a Certified Home Energy Inspector. The online training and certification are free for members. No infrared, blower door, or additional training is needed.
Wood-Destroying Organism (Termite) Inspections
In 2022, InterNACHI asked John Feagans of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture Structural Pest Control & Pesticide Division to provide an opinion about NC home inspectors inspecting and reporting upon structural wood damage possibly caused by wood-destroying organisms during a home inspection. Read the public opinion email.
NC home inspectors who observe some apparent wood damage during a home inspection are permitted by the NCDA Structural Pest Control & Pesticides Division to report that the inspector observed damage to wood or the structure. However, the inspector is not permitted to state that it is due to a particular wood-destroying organism.
The NCDA Structural Pest Control & Pesticides Division permits this type of inspection as long as a specific wood-destroying organism is not identified on the report.
The home inspector should also recommend further evaluation by an NC-licensed Structural Pest Control Applicator in order to avoid possible violations of the N.C. Structural Pest Control Rules & Regulations.
North Carolina Department of Agriculture's Structural Pest Control and Pesticides Division approves InterNACHI's Wood-Destroying Organisms Inspection Course. Course #OG500 expires 6/30/2021.
