How to Become a Certified Home Inspector in Utah
The state of Utah has implemented House Bill 58 in 2025, which introduces a new license category for Private Home Inspectors under Utah Code §58-56-9, effective January 1, 2026. All private home inspectors in the state of Utah are required to be licensed by the Utah Division of Professional Licensing. To become a licensed home inspector in Utah, H.B. 58, Utah Code §58-56-9 requires the following:
- Proof of Certification from a Certifying Organization - You may be certified by any of the organizations approved by Utah DOPL, such as InterNACHI.
- General Liability Insurance - You need to provide at least $500,000 in coverage.
- Errors & Omissions Insurance - You need to provide at least $500,000 in coverage, with DOPL to be named as the Certificate Holder.
InterNACHI’s Certified Professional Inspector (CPI®) certification and education satisfy the state’s certification requirement.
You should maintain your InterNACHI CPI certification and membership, and keep your insurance at the required limits.
