How to Become a Registered Home Inspector in Montana
InterNACHI’s Montana Home Inspector Pre-Registration Program
Welcome to the Montana Home Inspector Registration Program. Montana requires individuals who perform home inspections for compensation to be registered with the Montana Department of Labor & Industry. Before beginning any registration application, you should review the department’s registration requirements, education pathways, insurance obligations, association membership, and continuing education expectations.

To Become a Registered Home Inspector in Montana, You Must:
- Meet the eligibility requirements established by the Montana Department of Labor & Industry.
- Successfully complete 40 hours of comprehensive home inspection instruction approved by the department or pass a department-approved national home inspection examination. Montana accepts InterNACHI's Home Inspector Certificate Program for pre-licensing.
- Maintain membership in a national home inspector association recognized by the state. Join InterNACHI®.
- Provide proof of a minimum of $100,000 general commercial liability insurance and a minimum of $100,000 errors and omissions insurance covering all home inspection services. InterNACHI members do receive a discount on insurance, and you can get a quote at nachi.org/insurance.
- Provide proof of coverage under a workers’ compensation policy or hold an independent contractor exemption certificate (ICEC) if self-employed and not covered by workers’ compensation.
- Submit a completed registration application and required fees to the Montana Department of Labor & Industry.
InterNACHI's 40-Hour MDLI-Approved Program
Montana accepts the InterNACHI Home Inspector Certificate Program for pre-licensing education. In addition to the program's four prerequisites, you'll need to complete the following online courses:
- Safe Practices for the Home Inspector;
- 25 Standards Every Inspector Should Know;
- Residential Plumbing Overview for Inspectors;
- How to Perform Residential Electrical Inspections;
- How to Perform Roof Inspections;
- How to Inspect HVAC Systems;
- Structural Issues for Home Inspectors;
- How to Inspect the Exterior;
- How to Inspect the Attic, Insulation, Ventilation, and Interior;
- How to Perform Deck Inspections;
- How to Inspect for Moisture Intrusion; and
- How to Inspect Fireplaces, Stoves, and Chimneys.
You may complete the courses in any order.
Once you've completed the program in full, you will be able to download your certificate of completion.

After You’re Registered - Keep It Active
Each individual home inspector covered by a registration must complete 40 hours of continuing education relevant to home inspection over the prior two years in order to renew the registration. InterNACHI provides state-approved CE.
Registered home inspectors must maintain general liability and errors and omissions insurance in at least the minimum amounts required by the department and must continue to meet workers’ compensation coverage or hold an ICEC throughout the registration period.
You must retain proof of CE completion for your renewal cycle. InterNACHI® Certificates of Completion are available via the InterNACHI® dashboard FOREVER.
