How to Become a Licensed Home Inspector in Rhode Island
InterNACHI’s Rhode Island Home Inspector Pre-Licensing Program
Welcome to the Rhode Island Home Inspector Licensing Program. Rhode Island requires individuals who perform home inspections for compensation to be licensed by the Rhode Island Contractors’ Registration and Licensing Board (CRLB). Before beginning any pre-licensing education or applying for a license, you should familiarize yourself with the Board’s licensing requirements, examinations, and application procedures.

To Become a Licensed Associate Home Inspector in Rhode Island, You Must:
- Meet the eligibility requirements established by the Rhode Island Contractors’ Registration and Licensing Board, including having graduated from high school or earned a GED certificate.
- Successfully passed the National Home Inspector Examination (NHIE) or another examination as prescribed by the board. To help practice or prepare for the exam, you may take InterNACHI's Online Home Inspector Exam (free and open to everyone), take the InterNACHI® Ultimate Home Inspection Practice Test (free and online for members), and take InterNACHI's accredited online courses (free and online for members).
- Perform 50 home inspections under supervision, or meet alternative experience requirements as allowed by board rule. Find an InterNACHI® Mentor near you.
- Provide proof of liability and errors and omissions insurance with coverage amounts and certificate holder requirements as determined by the Board, a minimum coverage of $500,000 for each. InterNACHI members do receive a discount on insurance, and you can get a quote at nachi.org/insurance.
- Submit a completed application and the required fee to the Rhode Island Contractors’ Registration and Licensing Board.
To Become a Licensed Home Inspector in Rhode Island, You Must:

Home Inspector Certificate Program
Although Rhode Island does not require education for home inspector licensure, InterNACHI offers the InterNACHI® Home Inspector Certificate Program, which provides comprehensive training, education, and certification.
This program may be used to supplement and enhance your required in-person training, strengthen your technical knowledge, and help prepare you for professional home inspection practice and membership in a qualifying national home inspection association.
After You’re Licensed — Keep It Active
Rhode Island home inspector licenses must be renewed every two years with the Rhode Island Contractors’ Registration and Licensing Board. Licensed home inspectors are required to complete 12 hours of state-approved continuing education during each renewal cycle. InterNACHI provides state-approved CE.
You must retain proof of CE completion for your renewal cycle. InterNACHI® Certificates of Completion are available via the InterNACHI® dashboard FOREVER.
