How to Become a State-Registered Home Inspector in Wisconsin
InterNACHI’s Wisconsin Home Inspector Pre-Registration Program
Welcome to the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) Home Inspector Registration Program. Before beginning the program, you should familiarize yourself with DSPS’s website and the process for submitting your registration application.

To Become A Registered Home Inspector In Wisconsin, You Must:
- Complete a minimum of 40 hours of approved home inspector education. InterNACHI’s 40-hour Wisconsin pre-licensing program is approved.
- Complete 20 hours of practical, supervised in-field training with a licensed home inspector performing home inspections and home inspection report writing, as required by WI SPS 131. Search "Wisconsin" at www.nachi.org/vendor-offers for hands-on trainers or Find an InterNACHI® Mentor near you.
- Pass both examinations required by DSPS:
- The National Home Inspector Examination (NHIE). To help practice or prepare for the exam, you may take InterNACHI's Online Home Inspector Exam (free and open to everyone), take the InterNACHI® Ultimate Home Inspection Practice Test (free and online for members), and take InterNACHI's accredited online courses (free and online for members).
AND - The Wisconsin Home Inspector Statutes and Rules Exam. To help practice or prepare for the exam, you may take InterNACHI's Online Home Inspector Exam (free and open to everyone), take the InterNACHI® Ultimate Home Inspection Practice Test (free and online for members), and take InterNACHI's accredited online courses (free and online for members).
- The National Home Inspector Examination (NHIE). To help practice or prepare for the exam, you may take InterNACHI's Online Home Inspector Exam (free and open to everyone), take the InterNACHI® Ultimate Home Inspection Practice Test (free and online for members), and take InterNACHI's accredited online courses (free and online for members).
- Submit an application for Home Inspector Registration Form #2466. Forms and instructions can be found at: https://dsps.wi.gov/Pages/Professions/HomeInspector/Default.aspx
- Pay all required application and registration fees as listed by DSPS.
Note: If a registration has been expired for five years or more, DSPS requires reinstatement, which includes completion of 40 hours of continuing education and passing the WI Statutes & Rules Exam.
InterNACHI's 40-Hour DSPS-Approved Program
InterNACHI’s program meets all of the pre-licensing requirements outlined in SPS 131.405 Standards for approval of pre-registration education.

Pre-Licensing: Wisconsin 20-Hour Practical Training

After you’re registered — keep it active
Wisconsin home inspector registrations require 40 hours of continuing education every two years. The CE hours must be completed between December 15 of an even-numbered year through December 14 of the next even-numbered year. InterNACHI provides state-approved CE.
You must retain proof of CE completion for your renewal cycle. InterNACHI® Certificates of Completion are available via the InterNACHI® dashboard FOREVER.
