How to Become a Licensed Home Inspector in North Carolina
InterNACHI’s North Carolina Home Inspector Pre-Licensing Program
Welcome to the North Carolina Home Inspector Licensing Program. North Carolina requires individuals who perform home inspections for compensation to be licensed by the North Carolina Home Inspector Licensure Board (NCHILB). Applicants must meet education, examination, background, and application requirements before a license may be issued.

To Become a Licensed Home Inspector in North Carolina, You Must:
- Be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Complete the required 200 hours of Board-approved pre-licensing education, which consists of the following components:
• A 120-hour online pre-licensing program. InterNACHI® is a state-approved education provider.
or
• A 120-hour in-person pre-licensing class (provided by approved training partners for a fee). You can find InterNACHI’s approved partner schools.
AND
• 80 hours of field training (provided by approved training partners for a fee). You can find InterNACHI’s approved partner schools. (Note: The field training is required for both options) - Pass the North Carolina Home Inspector Licensure Examination, which is the National Home Inspector Examination (NHIE) administered for North Carolina. To help practice or prepare for the exam, you may take InterNACHI's Online Home Inspector Exam (free and open to everyone), take the InterNACHI® Ultimate Home Inspection Practice Test (free and online for members), and take InterNACHI's accredited online courses (free and online for members).
- Successfully complete a criminal background check as required by the Board.
- Submit a completed application to the North Carolina Home Inspector Licensure Board.
Note: Your Home Inspector application must be approved, and exam fee ($80) paid before an exam can be scheduled.

You may complete the courses in any order.
Once you've completed the program in full, you will be able to download your certificate of completion.

North Carolina home inspector licenses must be renewed annually through the North Carolina Home Inspector Licensure Board.
Licensed home inspectors are required to complete 12 hours of continuing education each year, which includes a 4-hour Board-developed update course and 8 hours of elective continuing education, in order to renew a license. Licensed inspectors can not obtain CE between September 10th and October 1st. Courses must be taken outside of that timeframe in order to obtain state credit.
InterNACHI provides state-approved CE.
You must retain proof of CE completion for your renewal cycle. InterNACHI® Certificates of Completion are available via the InterNACHI® dashboard FOREVER.
