How to Become a Licensed Home Inspector in Utah
InterNACHI’s Utah Home Inspector Pre-Licensing Program
Welcome to the Utah Home Inspector Licensing Program. Effective January 1, 2026, Utah will require individuals who perform home inspections to be licensed by the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL). Before beginning the program, you should familiarize yourself with DOPL’s website and the licensing process, including any updates as administrative rules are finalized.

To Become A Licensed Home Inspector In Utah, You Must:
- Complete an approved home inspector education program. Utah accepts InterNACHI's Home Inspector Certificate Program for pre-licensing.
- Maintain required insurance coverage, including general liability insurance and errors & omissions (E&O) insurance, in amounts established below:
- $500,000 E&O Insurance that names the Division as the certificate holder.
- $500,000 General Liability Insurance that names the Division as the certificate holder. InterNACHI members do receive a discount on insurance, and you can get a quote at nachi.org/insurance.
- Submit an application to DOPL.
InterNACHI’s Home Inspector Certificate Program
Utah accepts our Home Inspector Certificate Program for pre-licensing. In addition to the program's four prerequisites, you'll need to complete the following online courses:
- Safe Practices for the Home Inspector;
- 25 Standards Every Inspector Should Know;
- Residential Plumbing Overview for Inspectors;
- How to Perform Residential Electrical Inspections;
- How to Perform Roof Inspections;
- How to Inspect HVAC Systems;
- Structural Issues for Home Inspectors;
- How to Inspect the Exterior;
- How to Inspect the Attic, Insulation, Ventilation, and Interior;
- How to Perform Deck Inspections;
- How to Inspect for Moisture Intrusion; and
- How to Inspect Fireplaces, Stoves, and Chimneys.
You may complete the courses below in any order.
Once you've completed the program in full, you will be able to download your certificate of completion.

After You’re Licensed — Keep It Active
Licenses expire on November 30 of odd years. At least 60 days prior to the expiration date of a license, DOPL will mail a renewal notice to the licensee's address of record as provided to DOPL by the individual licensee.
You are required to maintain national certification in each area for which you provide inspection services and when new codes are adopted you must update your national certification to the currently adopted codes.
Certified Professional Inspectors (CPI®) are required to remain in good standing with InterNACHI by maintaining active membership and completing 24 hours of continuing education each year.
