How to Become a Registered Home Inspector in South Dakota
InterNACHI’s South Dakota Home Inspector Pre-Registeration Program
Welcome to the South Dakota Home Inspector Licensing Program. South Dakota requires individuals who perform home inspections for compensation to be registered or licensed by the South Dakota Real Estate Commission (SDREC), Department of Labor and Regulation. Before beginning any pre-licensing education or applying for a license, you should review the state’s licensing requirements, approved education providers, and application process.

To Become a Registered Home Inspector in South Dakota, You Must:
- Be at least 18 years of age, be a citizen of the United States or a resident of South Dakota.
- Complete a 40-hour pre-licensing education program approved by the South Dakota Real Estate Commission. InterNACHI® is a state-approved education provider.
- Pass the required South Dakota Real Estate Home Inspector exam, visit PSI’s website, select “Begin Scheduling” and select the South Dakota Real Estate Home Inspector exam. You must submit your home inspector registration within 60 days of passing the exam.
- Submit to a state and federal criminal background check. Contact the Commission office to request a set of DCI and FBI fingerprint cards.
- Submit a completed application and required fees to the South Dakota Real Estate Commission.
- After working as a registered home inspector for at least one year and performing at least 100 compensated inspections, you may apply to upgrade your registration to a licensed home inspector by submitting the required experience log.

After You’re Licensed — Keep It Active
South Dakota home inspector licenses must be renewed every two years with the South Dakota Real Estate Commission. Licensed and registered home inspectors are required to complete 24 Hours of continuing education before renewing a license. InterNACHI provides state-approved CE.
You must retain proof of CE completion for your renewal cycle. InterNACHI® Certificates of Completion are available via the InterNACHI® dashboard FOREVER.
